Welcome. My name is River, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist associate. Currently, I am furthering my expertise by pursuing a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy at Touro University, from which I previously graduated summa cum laude. My professional and scholarly pursuits are specifically concentrated in the field of marriage and family therapy, focusing on the intricate impact of family dynamics on individual psychological states.
The core of my doctoral research revolves around attachment theory, with a particular interest in how early familial relationships influence the development of dissociative symptoms in later life. This research underscores my commitment to understanding and addressing the roots of complex emotional and behavioral issues within family systems.
In my clinical practice, I aim to foster an inclusive and supportive environment, particularly attuned to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Part of my commitment involves offering pro bono services such as writing support letters for gender-affirming surgeries, in compliance with the latest WPATH standards.
My foundational clinical skills were significantly developed at the Kitsap Sexual Assault Center, where I specialized in supporting survivors of complex trauma. This role deepened my expertise in integrating multiple therapeutic models, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Family Systems Theory, and Polyvagal Theory, to create a comprehensive, tailored approach to therapy. I am committed to employing these models to address the multifaceted needs of those experiencing complex trauma, ensuring a nuanced and effective therapeutic intervention. Additionally, I utilize play-based therapies, such as sand tray therapy, which provides both children and adults a unique medium through which to express experiences and emotions that might be difficult to articulate verbally. This combined methodological approach enhances my ability to facilitate healing and resilience among my clients.
I am dedicated to remaining at the forefront of therapeutic developments, actively engaging with professional bodies such as the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and EMDRIA. This engagement ensures that my therapeutic practices are both contemporary and grounded in ethical standards.
For those seeking assistance with personal or familial issues, or support in affirming their identity, my practice offers a collaborative therapeutic environment. Together, we will explore underlying challenges, devise actionable strategies for resolution, and celebrate each milestone of progress.
Taking the step to engage in therapy is a significant act of self-care. If you are looking for a therapist who is deeply invested in both ongoing research and individualized patient care, I welcome you to start this transformative journey with me.
